The Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector course is a basic entry level qualification to get you in to a teaching or training role.

The course is available at level 3 or level 4.

PTLLS Level 3 courses are suitable for potential teachers or trainers that want to teach or train in a private education setting.  This could be within your company or organisation, or where the training you provide (or plan to provide) is not funded by the Government.  This is an ‘Entry Level’ PTLLS qualification, and therefore no formal qualifications are required to take part in this course.

PTLLS Level 4 courses are suitable for potential teachers that want to teach or currently teach in a publicly funded educational setting.  This could be in schools, F.E colleges, sixth form or universities.  In addition to this, you will also be able to train in a private setting as described above.  You must have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in the subject area that you wish to teach in order to start the PTLLS Level 4 training course.  A Level 3 qualification is an ‘A’ Level (or equivalent), or higher qualification.  If you are unsure of what qualifications you have already, please CONTACT US.

Our Online PTLLS Training Course uses state of the art e-learning technology that ensures the whole process is totally interactive.  You can access your learning anywhere you have an internet connection and a computer.

What is PTLLS?

PTLLS is the short name for the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector qualification. It is both an introductory course and professional qualification awarded by Edexcel. PTLLS gives a threshold status to teachers wanting to teach. PTLLS is a compulsory qualification for all new teachers in further and adult education.

PTLLS is a four unit qualification containing a range of learning outcomes. The PTLLS award has a credit value of 12 credits on the QCF. It forms the first unit of the CTLLS and DTLLS courses; PTLLS can be offered as an integrated unit or as a stand alone qualification.

If taken as a stand-alone qualification, PTLLS can receive recognition of prior learning (RPL) within CTLLS, DTLLS, and the level 5 subject specialist diplomas for literacy, ESOL and numeracy (120 credits).

From September 2007, any person that is a tutor, trainer, teacher, lecturer or instructor in England is required to hold a professional PTLLS certificate. The PTLLS requirement is the new rule to initial teacher training for Further Education introduced in England only. It is not a mandatory requirement to hold PTLLS in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. However, it is seen as best practice and is also a requirement to be able to deliver QCF qualifications.
